Dear City Council members and staff,
Im writing to express my concern about the 5-year Street maintenance plan and the planned resurfacing of Woodland Avenue. Specifically, I am concerned that Complete Streets principals and CG-1 Walkway Standards are not being applied on this route.
I ride my bike and walk along Woodland Ave for exercise and to get to Cafe Zoe. Its much more pleasant than biking or walking on Willow Rd. Im guessing thats why I see a lot of other folks out walking and biking on this windy, creekside route.
That said, those of us on foot and bike have to contend with heavy car traffic on Woodland Ave. And were all navigating a narrow road that lacks basic safety infrastructure, such as bike lanes and continuous walkways.
I urge the council to direct staff to:
Prioritize Complete Streets: Integrate the principles of the Transportation Master Plan, Vision Zero Action Plan, and AB 413 (Daylighting law) into the Woodland Avenue resurfacing project. This includes adding bike lanes (or at least sharrows), widening sidewalks to meet CG-1 standards, improving crosswalks, and implementing traffic calming measures.
Explore alternative drainage solutions that do not compromise pedestrian safety and walkability.
Perhaps crushed granite or other permeable materials could be used to create walkways and bike paths and still allow for drainage?
Lets plan for and prioritize safe travel for all users of Woodland Avenue.
Thank you,
Katherine Dumont
