Learning Opportunity - History of Menlo Park Zoning

Dear City Councilmembers, Staff, and residents,

I am the chair of the Menlo Park Housing Commission, writing as myself, and as a co-facilitator the upcoming community event: The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America…and Menlo Park, on January 6, 6:30-8:00pm. The event is organized by Menlo Together (of which I am a founding member) and Community Equity Collaborative, hosted by the Menlo Park City School District, and open to the public.

I’m writing to invite you to attend. My understanding is that the meeting will be noticed for the Planning Commission, Housing Commission, and City Council so that all members may join if they want to, but please confirm this when city staff return to work on January 4th.

I believe this online workshop is an important foundation on which to build our Housing Element discussions.

I hope you will join the conversation with local groups Menlo Together and Community Equity Collaborative to discuss how the policies and practices that segregated America affected Menlo Park. We’ll dive into information presented in Richard Rothstein’s book The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America and take a deeper look at our region from a historical and governmental perspective. We will learn, reflect, and discuss how to move toward an equitable future in Menlo Park & beyond.

Register in advance for the workshop, here: https://mpcsd.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAld-qgrD4sGtcsuAO4fFwobZ9B7TKh_jeV

All my best,

Karen Grove
