Dear Menlo Park City Council Members,
Thank you for your service in these challenging times. I know you are dealing with multiple crises at once and we are in your debt for your civi service.
I write to urge you in the strongest terms to reinstate your Climate Plan as one of the five top priorities for Menlo Park in 2021. The climate emergency is accelerating rapidly and is a “force multiplier” that exacerbates virtually all other challenges with which you are reckoning. It is an emergency. We have no time to waste. Please reconsider your decision to downgrade it as a focus of your energy in the coming year.
On January 9, 2021 I moderated a panel with Greta Thunberg and the Dalai Lama and over a million viewers from around the world. Our message is that climate feedback loops are a clear and imminent threat to life on the planet. The urgency of the threat has been underestimated because these feedback loops are not in most of the statistical models that have shaped targets for reducing greenhouse emissions in the hope of holding global heating to 1.5 C above preindustrial levels. We are approaching irreversible tipping points in the global climate system. We need all responsible decision makers at all levels to be working on solutions.
