Dear Menlo Park City Council,
I have lived and/or worked in Menlo Park/Atherton for over 55 years. I am a property owner on Crane Street, downtown. My building has a mix of office and retail uses.
I am categorically opposed to converting downtown parking plazas to housing, as it would drastically adversely impact the downtown retail/business district. Building on these parking plazas is a bad idea. Focusing on these locations simply does not make sense from a development or economic point of view. The January Council meeting clearly shows that there is a large constituency who are opposed to this idea and the permanent negative change to the downtown that this would create. Further, choosing these sites will doubtlessly subject the City to lengthy, costly litigation.
The parking plazas are the wrong sites for housing and the City already owns other locations that would be more appropriate, including open space in the Civic Center area and at 1283 Willow Road amongst other areas.
I hope that the City will re-focus its efforts on sites which are clearly more appropriate for housing, rather than the Downtown Parking Plazas.
Sincerely,
Henry Kuechler
