Dear Mayor Mueller and Members of the City Council,
As a small, responsible housing provider in Menlo Park, I am writing to oppose Alternative B, the Tenant Relocation Ordinance as
proposed by the Housing Commission and modified by Mayor Pro Tem Nash and Councilmember Taylor. I feel strongly that there are
better ways to address our local housing challenges, and I specifically foresee Alternative B as having many negative unintended
consequences that will be harmful to the housing market in Menlo Park for both renters and landlords.
We heard many small rental property owners at the February 12thstudy session, elevate real and important concerns with their
compelling stories. The strict reality of Alternative B will cause some of the smaller housing providers in the city to pull out
of the market, reducing inventory even further. Furthermore, rents may increase as a hedge against downstream costs associated
with Alternative B, a consequence that is surely not intended.
I support the development of a potential “anti-displacement fund” that would help offset costs to find emergency housing for
at-risk tenants (households with an income less than 80 percent of the AMI)that would be funded by the community-at large as
opposed to the sole burden being placed on a specific class of small business owners. Combined with prudent long term planning on
how to increase the housing shortage through expedited processes, I think Menlo Park can address it’s short term goals and prevent
the housing crisis from continuing.
