> Dear Public Works,
> I wanted to write a quick note to say thank you for the placement of the white bollards on Olive Street near the corner of Santa
Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park. These bollards have been a very positive addition to help protect walkers, bikers and drivers. This
corner is a very stressful and hectic area during school commute times.
> My own 16 year old high schooler flipped over his bike and chipped his front tooth and damaged his knees at this intersection in
October of 2017 (before the bollards were placed).
> While riding his bike to school a car quickly pulled in front of him over to the side of the road on Olive Street near Santa Cruz
Avenue and other car swerved into the bike lane. As a result of the driver, my son hit the brakes and flipped (head first) over
his handlebars. He had a ▒▒▒▒▒▒ face and I had to immediately take him to the dentist to try and save his front tooth. It was a
very scary and costly incident. It cost me time away from work and miss an urgent meeting, the cost to cap his tooth, and my son’s
trust that drivers and the town are there to protect bike riders (kids on their way to school)
> Please understand the placement of these bollards has provided a safety net for bikers, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and
walkers. It also clearly prevents cars from pulling over to unload their students in an unsafe way.
> If the goal is to keep more cars off the roads and support the bike lanes that the dept has so generously and carefully painted
then these bollards are an extension of those efforts and are working to protect bike riders, people walking and wheelchairs.
I encourage you to keep these bollards in place for the safety of the community. Aesthetics (over safety) is not reason enough to
pull these out. I sincerely hope you agree.
My best to you,
Kimberly B. Vogel
