Safer Streets in Allied Arts

Dear Menlo Park City Council,

I am writing to express my strong support for implementing comprehensive traffic calming measures in the Allied Arts neighborhood, particularly as part of the Middle Avenue Traffic Calming project scheduled for summer 2025. As outlined in detail on https://alliedarts.info/ (which has over 110 residents of Allied Arts pledging support), the planned installation of 4-5 speed humps along Middle Avenue is likely to exacerbate cut-through traffic issues within Allied Arts, diverting vehicles onto adjacent residential streets and creating unintended safety risks.

The Cut-through Traffic Mitigation proposal (accessible via allied arts.info) provides an evidence-based approach with effective, community-supported solutions, including gateways, all-way stops, and a 15 mph speed limit near schools, senior facilities, and pedestrian-dense areas. These measures align closely with Menlo Park’s Vision Zero Action Plan, prioritizing local-serving roadways, reducing vehicle speeds, and ensuring safety for our most vulnerable residents.

Given the clear evidence presented in the Cut-through Traffic Mitigation proposal—highlighting the risks associated with partial implementations and the importance of a comprehensive neighborhood approach—I urge the City Council to proactively include these proposed measures as an integral part of the Middle Avenue project. A cohesive strategy is crucial for maintaining resident safety, preserving neighborhood quality of life, and preventing the displacement of traffic issues from one street to another.

Thank you for your consideration and commitment to safer streets for everyone in our community.

Sincerely,
Will Biederman
