Dear Members of the City Council,
I just heard that there is a chance that the six climate measures from 2020 will be cut or placed at a lower priority during the Tuesday City Council meeting. I am urging you to keep climate front and center.
The COVID-19 worldwide emergency will pale compared to climate catastrophes that will engulf us if we don’t act now. Specifically, I am asking you to:
1) Explore converting 95% of buildings in the city to all-electric by 2030;
2) Expand access to charging for electric vehicles citywide; and
3) Stop using fossil fuels for city operations.
Our city is not huge, but every action counts. We can stand as an example and a beacon to others. I will certainly have an electric vehicle when my current old small car wears out, and charging stations will be important to me and others.
More than that, it will give me some confidence that City Council members and City personnel are aware that there is a sizable population (I am a member of this group) that feels a daily dread about what our future (and, in many cases, the future has already arrived) will be like for ourselves, our children, our neighbors’ children, and our grandchildren. It gives me little comfort to think that at 77 I might miss the worst of climate catastrophes when I know that my 4-year-old grandson has to grow up into that world.
Please take the high road and show our neighboring cities—and in this world, we are all neighbors—that you know that climate is our top existential issue, and act upon this knowledge.
Many thanks.
