I strongly support this plan and other ways to bring more dining options to downtown Menlo Park. It is great that some of these businesses have invested in this. We need more incentives for other restaurants to make such investments to revitalize the area.

Making Santa Cruz Ave a Go-To Place

Even before the pandemic, and before the partial closure of Santa Cruz Ave, businesses on Santa Cruz Avenue were shutting down. So there should be no hurry to restore what was. Right?
Meanwhile Bistro Vida and Left Bank and Roma and others have invested heavily in outdoor dining structures, to protect us from the wet and the cold, structures that protrude into the street. Why would we close down that effort now? And how long will it be before we are again comfortable dining indoors?
Given that scenario, I will endorse what Dana Hendrickson advocates in his blog. Keep the restaurants on the streets. Take this opportunity to help revitalize the City. Invite people downtown by sponsoring and supporting resident and business and City events on Santa Cruz. And put our economic development director in charge of the project.
Of course, cross streets should be open where possible, so access to parking is maintained. Prime the pump with funds. And let's have a two-year trial.
Yes. Let's make a conscious, big-time effort to invigorate Santa Cruz and our City. Make it a place people want to go. There is more that must be done in support of that effort, but this is a good start.
