Dear City Council, While I am excited about the possibility for investment in our library system, I have some concerns and would like to see more time for community input. I had understood the highest priority for library investment was in the Belle Haven neighborhood, not Burgess, and that their library is in borrowed space with limited hours. This doesn’t seem fair to invest more in Burgess without improving Belle Haven first. Second, I don’t understand what the staff and council will not be able to do if they focus on the library—what is the opportunity cost of this investment? I understand these may include but are not limited to the following: Important zoning changes designed to protect housing stock being delayed by six months. Transit projects on El Camino, in the Willows, and in the M-2/Bayfront delayed by six months to a year Safe routes project delays of up to one year. Downtown streetscape projects (the Paseo) delayed by one year Finally, I’m wondering if this is the best use for the publicly owned land. While I’m grateful to the Arrillaga family for their generous offer, I want to be sure it’s in the best interest of all residents. Thanks for your continued service.
