I attended the city council meeting last night and was disappointed that the council, with the exception of councilmember Mueller, voted to move ahead with expenditures concerning the new libraries before public opinion was surveyed, and before the city council 2017 work plan was revisited. In addition the council seems willing to allow the city manager to make a staff hire without going through standard hiring procedures, and with the sole objective of library management. Under these conditions, I think a contract hire rather than a staff hire would be more prudent. When/if the library bonds go to the public for approval, the Main Library and the Belle Haven Library bonds should be presented as two separate bonds. This will provide the opportunity for the community to vote on any combination of potential funding, and not force us to vote for both or none.
