HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY

Honorable Mayor and Council Members: This month marks the 90th birthday of the CITY OF MENLO PARK. C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S ! ! ! ! ! ! 1927 - 2017. On November 23, 1927, the City of Menlo Park officially became incorporated. At that time, Menlo Park had a population of approx. 2,500 persons. Bootlegging was a thriving business. The Mayor at the time tried to clamp down on the moonshine business, but didn't succeed. Later on, Jerry Garcia and his famous band lived off Alameda de las Pulgas in West Menlo Park. At the time his band was known as the Warlocks, but later become known as the iconic Grateful Dead. They performed at Magoo's Pizza Parlor located on Santa Cruz Avenue. Another who's who was Ken Kesey, who lived on Perry Lane. He may best be known as the volunteer for drug testing at the Veterans Hospital. Ever popular Round Table Pizza opened their first store in 1959, located in none other than the City of Menlo Park, where it remains to this day. Many are surprised to see the CALIFORNIA State Landmark #2 where, you guessed it, is located in Menlo Park. It can be found near the San Francisquito Creek at the end of Alma Street, at the city limit line for Palo Alto. This commemorated the Portola Expedition who camped there in year 1764. The large 6' tall monument there is worth visiting; be sure to share it with the kids. By 1950, following World War II, the population grew to an estimated 13,587. By year 1990, it was 28,040, according to the U.S. Census. Today, the population is estimated to be 33,071. Bottom line, you've come a long ways. Thank you for your leadership. vision and the countless hours addressing the issues of the day. Respectfully, James Lewis, President Menlo Park Historical Association (
