Echo Concerns about Gun Shop coming to San Carlos

Dear Menlo Park Council, Via resident emails to you, I learned that Turner's Outdoorsman, https://www.turners.com/storelocator.cfm?locRad=100&locZip=&locSt=CA > a store that sells semiautomatic assult rifles, is opening a location in San Carlos in "late November." I confirmed this online. I agree completely with the concerns raised in Nick Taylor's email to the San Carlos Council (and then sent to you) regarding gun sales in general. What he said about Australia is also fact. After the horrible massacre in Port Arthur, the Australian government acted quickly and responsibly to restrict guns and the country hasn't had a mass shooting since. I don't want a store that sells semiautomatic rifles (or equipment that allows someone to modify a gun to create such an effect) so close to Menlo Park. I plan to write the San Carlos City Council and their business development manager and commission http://www.cityofsancarlos.org/depts/ed/economic_development_advisory_commission_(edac ).asp>. Their City Council http://www.cityofsancarlos.org/depts/mayor_council/default.asp >meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month with the next Council meeting taking place on Nov 13. I plan to attend to make a public comment and I invite other concerned citizens to join me there. City Manager -- Did this news catch you off guard? I will assume so for now and ask you to establish some type of expectation whereby the MP Business Development Manager and staff also look out for MP interests in neighboring cities as it pertains to potentially objectionable businesses. A stronger working relationship with business development counterparts in Peninsula cities might have changed this outcome -- possibly with the need for some concessions from Menlo Park. Longer-term, stronger relationships could lead to a more regional approach to business planning and help with other regional partnerships that our city is engaged in.
