Dear Members of the Menlo Park City Council: > We appreciate your work on the Bedwell Bayfront Park Master Plan and are pleased that on-leash dogs are included. As Friends of Bedwell Bayfront Park, we have several dog owners among our members, and we have spoken to other dog owners and dog walkers about this. They do not want a dog park. > As a dog-owner myself, I appreciate taking my dog on long walks in the park enjoying nature. It is good for me and good for my dog. My experience has always been positive at the park over the 20 years I’ve walked there. > > The Friends are against the dog park and view it as incompatible with the Master Plan. > Dog parks > - require chain-link fenced enclosures that conflict with an open space landscape. > - are expensive to build and require maintenance. > - allow rough-house playing and barking with potential injuries to dogs. > - discourage the owner/dog experience of walking together in the park's natural environment. > > We are in favor of continuing the successful on-leash policies for Bedwell Bayfront Park including Ranger oversight, posting rules, adding dog bag stations and trash cans throughout the park.
