Dear City Council of Menlo Park,
Our neighborhoods have become a war zone. Not in the way of violence or crime, but in the near-constant auditory assault of fireworks. For the past 3 weeks, fireworks that sound like mortar shells have terrified our children and pets, set off car alarms, rattled our windows and scared us out of sleep. This has happened every night and many days. Many of the undersigned have phoned the police department to report this illegal activity, but we have seen no change in the frequency of these attacks on our peace.
We look to you as our elected leaders to provide guidance on this issue. We live in a time when many of us are barely holding onto our jobs, or are caring for our children full time and sleep is our only solace. To have this sleep disrupted night after night for weeks is bordering on cruel. Further, we have veterans, survivors of trauma and individuals struggling with mental health in our community. Constant and unexpected explosions have increased anxiety for all.
Again, we look to you for guidance. If there is a more appropriate means of reporting this activity, please let us know. Conversely, if the City is unable to deal with this issue, we would like to know this as well. These selfish acts, presumably performed for entertainment, are negatively impacting our peaceful neighborhoods and must stop. We look forward to hearing from you.
Respectfully,
