Fwd: Needs Immediate Attention: Stop Sign / Traffic Mitigation on Central Ave in the Willows

Sorry, the accident and pictures I took last night were at Central _at_(domainremoved) I just realized I mistakenly said Central _at_(domainremoved) recent accidents (girl on a bike last month). I appreciate that you see the seriousness of this. Apologies for any confusion I may have caused on the location! Best regards, Tricia ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tricia Barr Date: Fri, Jun 15, 2018 at 9:24 PM Subject: Needs Immediate Attention: Stop Sign / Traffic Mitigation on Central Ave in the Willows To: Nikki Nagaya jicmurphy_at_(domainremoved) Cc: Willows moms group All, Tonight, there was another accident at Central _at_(domainremoved) a bike. I'm sure the police and firefighters on scene can provide details. I've attached some pictures below. It is imperative that stop signs or other measures be put in place immediately on Central Avenue in the Willows. This is an intersection and street that neighbors have been concerned about for years. Accidents are happening more and more frequently. Please let me know how you plan to address this. We've been patient for years - and over that time, more and more people have been hurt. It is time to act. Respectfully, Tricia Barr ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tricia Barr Date: Fri, Jun 1, 2018 at 8:14 AM Subject: Willows and traffic To: Nikki Nagaya jicmurphy_at_(domainremoved) Hi Nikki and Justin, Thank you so much for the traffic measures taken late last year and earlier this year. I absolutely think the measures have made a difference in minimizing cut-through traffic through the Willows. I wanted to see if you are still evaluating measures on Central Ave, including stop signs. It is common to see discussions on NextDoor about this. Here is a post from last night by a woman named Sarah Caplan from Woodland Bayshore: *CHILD ON BIKE NEARLY HIT BY CAR IN WILLOWS* https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=83799396 > *My husband was driving his Ford 250 at 20mph down Central at 5:55pm this evening when a 7 or 8 year old blond boy with longish hair darted out from Elm (coming from the direction of the International School towards Menalto). My husband slammed on the brakes, causing all of his tools to fall everywhere, and he missed this boy by a foot at most. Hoping the parents of this child see this message, as this boy seems not to have stopped at the stop sign, or looked both ways to see if there was traffic. It was terrifying for my husband, and I'm sure for the boy as well.* Below are a few other threads from recent weeks. Thank you for all your hard work! Best regards, Tricia Here is from May 21st from a neighbor. There were 29 responses to this one which I'm happy to send if that's helpful.: *Concern about Central and Elm: speeders on Central* https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=83005633 > *The stop sign on Elm (headed towards Menalto) has been vandalized/turned upside down making a bad situation worse. I have reported the stop sign situation to the City of Menlo Park. I think most of the kids and adults who ride through this intersection are aware that they need to stop due to the very fast moving traffic on Central.* *A few years ago I witnessed a crash at this site. The teen bicyclist who was hit did not stop at the stop sign so technically he was at fault but the van that hit him was moving awfully fast and a more cautious driver would have been able to break in time. * *I don't have a proposed solution but I do hope that anyone who drives on this stretch of Central will consider driving slower (possibly losing 5 seconds of your time) as it seems like it's only a matter of time until we have another crash.* This is from May 7th with 18 responses which I'm happy to share if that's helpful.: *Near miss bike accidents in our community* https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=82033488 > *There was a bike accident in Central and Walnut this morning - not sure what happened but I saw pastel color blue bike - for maybe 8 year old girl and silver car in the middle of the street. * *I bike to work everyday and wanted to share near misses so both car drivers and bikers can learn. * *1. In Willow road, East bound cars are stuck in traffic, a car west bound turned abruptly left to enter Willow Cove gas station. I was biking east bound. Car was so fast, I didn’t see it until it was in front of me- and I hit the car door. If I am a little ahead, car probably hit me first. As a biker, I learned to really slow down when there is traffic in Willow. (And look out for any spaces in between cars). As a driver, I learned that even if other cars are letting me make my turn, I still want to make sure I am making a safe turn- looking out for bikers in the bike lane. * *2. I was biking west bound in Willow, west bound car turned right on Gilbert (or Coleman). Car thought I was turning right too so she did not stop (that is what she told the police). I am actually going straight to go to Middlefield. I did not know car was turning right- no signal or didn’t stop at all. I just noticed car was turning right so fast, so I had to make myself fall to avoid being hit. * *3. Biking east bound on Willow during traffic hours, east bound car in Gilbert is unable to move past traffic light even if it is still green to avoid blocking intersection. I always SLOW DOWN or stop on this intersection even if the light is GREEN, as I see a lot of west bound cars turning left on Gilbert without checking for bikers. * *4. I tell kids to walk their bike on Walnut and Central as cars on central does not stop. Sometimes, car stopped to let the kid cross but I saw one kid did not look the other way and had near miss (from the other side). Some cars have good intention but cause more harm I think. We should just all follow the rules and expect kids to do the same. * *I learned from my mistakes and would love to learn from yours too. Please share near misses so we can learn from each other’s mistake. If we can save just one more accident with this post, then I think it is worth sharing.* (image/jpeg attachment: IMG_2468.JPG ) (image/jpeg attachment: IMG_2474.JPG ) (image/jpeg attachment: IMG_2473.JPG ) (image/jpeg attachment: IMG_2475.JPG )
