Quiet Zone Elimination?

Dear Menlo Park City Council,

I just learned that the City may eliminate the Quiet Zone from its budget
planning. I am writing in opposition to this especially in light of the
fact that so many residents and businesses have been supportive of a Quiet
Zone at Encinal, Oak Grove, Glenwood and Ravenswood for many years. It is
estimated that a train horn blows approximately 1,200 times per day at the
four crossings which is disruptive to daily lives and quiet enjoyment of
our community. With engineering designs nearing completion, we are at an
important juncture to not simply enhance the quality of our lives with
noise reduction, but also make crossings considerably safer with the
addition of gates. It is my understanding that train conductors will still
have discretion to use their horn for any perceived safeness situations,
thus we’re achieving a solution palatable for all parties.

I recognize this must be paid for but believe all options should be on the
table. This was identified as a Tier 1 priority for a reason. Do not
abandon those whose lives would be greatly enriched in our homes,
businesses, hotels and public spaces by the Quiet Zone.

Thank you for not reversing course.

Joel Hopman
