EQC Public Comment meeting Jul-16 2025: Urgent Need for Quick-Build Safety Improvements on El Camino Real and Connected Active Transportation in Menlo Park

My name is Paul Kreiner and I live in the Willows neighborhood of Menlo
Park. I am writing as a private citizen to strongly urge immediate action
to improve safety on El Camino Real through quick-build pedestrian and
bicycle infrastructure.

While parts of Menlo Park are safe for pedestrians and bikes, there are
many areas that do not feel safe to navigate. El Camino in particular
stands out as a dangerous stretch that is unfriendly to bikes and
pedestrians. Menlo Park needs a connected bike and pedestrian network so
that everyone, especially students, seniors, and transit riders, can travel
safely.

A critical starting point would be quick-build projects, which offer a
powerful, cost-effective way to address this crisis. Tools like protected
bike lanes with Qwick Kurb channelizing systems, two-stage bike turn queue
boxes, and “No Right Turn on Red” signage can dramatically improve
safety—fast. While many cities have used quick-build techniques to protect
vulnerable road users, Caltrans has yet to apply these solutions on state
routes like El Camino Real in Menlo Park, even though these roads double as
local streets through dense communities.

Thanks for your support,
Paul Kreiner
