This is Ashleigh Howick with the staff of the California State Citizens Redistricting Commission. I am emailing to let you know of the last scheduled Community of Interest (COI) Public Input Meeting for the Bay Area on August 24th. (English Flyer, Spanish Flyer). Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, and Cantonese interpreters will be present at this meeting. We can provide another language interpreter if requested in advance.
If possible, we would love if you could help spread the word about the meeting to your constituents/networks. We have created a Digital Action Toolkit for those who can help with outreach efforts. If you are able to include the flyers or other information in newsletters, email blasts, social media, etc., we would greatly appreciate it and I am happy to assist in any way I can. Community input is vital to the success of the Commission. They rely on Communities of Interest information to best respect the boundaries of those communities during the redistricting process. How the district boundaries are configured can make the difference between empowering and maximizing voters’ voices or minimizing and muting those voices. The independent CA Citizens Redistricting Commission is committed to drawing fair districts that reflect the best interests of the people, not the incumbent politicians. Speaking up about your community is critical to ensuring district lines are drawn to keep your community whole to the extent possible, and grouped with nearby communities with similar interests. Your input is valuable in shaping the new political boundaries.
If you, or anyone you may know, would like to share information with the Commission about how you would like to see Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, or State Board of Equalization districts drawn, I encourage you to attend one of our virtual COI Meetings.

Registration is recommended but not required to participate in this public input meeting. If you prefer not to provide personal information for registration, you can call in the day of the event to get in the queue to speak.
DURING THE MEETING YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DESCRIBE YOUR COMMUNITY.
While there are no clear rules on how to define a community of interest, we’ve identified ways for you to describe your community.
1. Begin with your county or city.
2. Mention the street names and significant locations in your neighborhood to help us identify the parameters of your community.
3. What are your shared interests?
4. What brings you together?
5. What is important to your community?
6. Are there nearby areas you want to be in a district with?
7. Nearby areas you don't want to be in a district with? Why or why not?
8. Has your community come together to advocate for important services, better schools, roads, or health centers in your neighborhood?
