Menlo Park has a reputation of a forward-looking city in the battle to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, yet I've just read that you are considering the purchase of eight new gas-powered police cars. I'm asking you to please consider other options. I understand Fremont just recently purchased an all-electric police car, a 2016 Tesla model S. The article I read said that the cost to modify it was $60,000 as opposed to about $40,000 to modify Ford Explorers. However, gas can cost about $32,000 during the lifespan of a police vehicle (approximately five years) and maintenance can cost about $15,000, which makes the EV actually a more economical purchase. To say nothing of the fact that instead of pumping more carbon into the atmosphere, your cars will be completely clean. I urge you to research his matter further before you commit to an out-dated technology. As the researchers point out, there’s still time that we have to take advantage of. That’s why it’s so damn important to act boldly. Now. ~ Eric Holthaus Received on Mon May 20 2019 - 20:59:28 PDT
