Middle Avenue bike tunnel

The City Council needs to look at the math on the proposed bike tunnel. The estimated cost is at least $20 million. Assuming the useful life of the tunnel to be 50 years, and that the money could be put in the bank to earn 5% interest, the city could instead earn $3,000 per day. Assuming 200 people use the tunnel each day, the cost to the city would be $15 per person per trip. The city could save money by NOT building the tunnel and instead offering free Lyft or Uber trips from one side of the tracks to the other. Or instead, people can walk 1/2 mile north or 1/4 mile south and cross the tracks using the existing crossings. This doesn't even include the cost of maintaining and cleaning the tunnel, and defending the city against the inevitable lawsuits arising slip-and-fall accidents or from robberies in the tunnel. This is a colossal waste of taxpayer money that could be put to much better use. Sue Kayton 1854 Doris Drive Menlo Park Ca 94024-6102 650-853-1711 Received on Thu May 23 2019 - 08:31:18 PDT
