Hello Council Members My thanks and appreciation to those who were able to attend the ribbon cutting and open house for our new Fire Station 6 on Oak Grove Avenue in downtown Menlo Park last week. If you were unable to attend, I would be happy to give you a tour, it's well worth seeing. With over 120 years of uninterrupted service to the community, the Fire District believes in not only preserving our past, but also learning from it. So with that in mind, I thought you would enjoy reading this progress report from 1969 with the issues of the day, 50 years ago. I specifically worked with former City Manager Mike Bedwell during City wide emergency exercises starting in 1982. At first as a scribe for the Fire Chief and then later when the District partnered with the City on Emergency Management for Disasters. With a renewed collaboration between the City and Fire District in mind, I'm hopeful we can jointly build a dedicated emergency operations center (EOC) and/or multi-agency coordination center (MAC) at Fire Station one on Middlefield Road, where we acquired one acre of additional land from the Seminary. History is a great teacher and often, what was old is new again! In 1969 the City struggled with growth, parking, traffic congestion, updating downtown, El Camino Real, recreation, transit, a regional approach, Police uniforms and plans for Bell Haven, sound familiar!
