Public Comment - Menlo - Building Code - Item H1 - 08.12.2025

In case I am not able to attend the meeting tonight, here are my comments:

Dear Mayor, Vice Mayor, Council members, and honorable staff,

I’m Jenny Michel, a native living in D3, a recovering homeless teacher, and
a disabled bus rider.

Personal comments:

I again want to thank staff for their additional work on this item
especially because of the recently passed legislation, we might not hear
this item again for another six (6) years to amend the code for residential
units. Way to show leadership and tenacity for the policy option C or
Flexpath. I ask the Council to vote yes on your recommendations.

We live in 40 year old apartments on Willow Road with a gas water heater
and two gas wall mounted furnaces within five feet of each other. The fumes
coming off the units makes our son sick to his stomach, and he routinely
asks for the pilot lights to be turned off. Even then, you can still smell
the rank stink.

Although our landlord is large and owns many units in Menlo with their
names on pavilions and structures around town, it will take an act of God
to move them towards a healthy alternative. In other words, it must come
from this body or else they will continue to place our health in danger
knowingly and willingly.

I’m sorry that many senior homeowners are not able to convert their gas
units to electrical at this time. But that sounds like a rich person’s
problem when the median sales price in Menlo is $3.5Million for a single
family home. Lenders will work with you to leverage your home equity to pay
for a healthy option to provide heating and cooling for your spaces. It’s
worth the small investment to ensure healthy air for all!

Thank you for your consideration! Jenny from the Coleman Place block
