Staff Report (#21-170-CC)

As 30 year homeowners and residents of Menlo Park, we would like register our objection to the proposed legislation requiring all gas appliances be replaced with electrical appliances sooner than 2030 for existing homes. At this time, the existing electrical grid cannot support demands at certain periods of time as it is and this spike in electrical appliances as well as new air conditioning systems being installed due to increasing environmental temperatures will only exacerbate the situation. As it is, when AC and water are needed at critical times of extreme temperatures, people’s lives are put at risk and qualities of living is decreased.

This increases the cost of such replacement both in terms of the appliance , wiring and infrastructure such as electrical panels. It wil also likely exacerbate the appliance shortage.

We are in favor of mana dating all electrical appliances for new homes and inacting replacement of gas appliances for existing homes effective in 2030. This gives time to build-up the infrastructure to support further electrification of homes in Menlo Park.

Sincerely,

Vera & Georges Goupille
