Dear City Council Members, In remembrance of the 7th year since the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy, I am organizing an Interfaith Vigil Remembering Victims of Gun Violence. This year it will be on Saturday, Dec 14th from 4:00-5:30 at Lytton Plaza in Palo Alto. As a resident of Menlo Park, I would like to invite each of you to attend the event. The number of gun deaths in America has been increasing. In 2017, there were 39,773 gun deaths – the highest level in 40 years. By remembering the victims and the impact gun violence has in our communities, we bring attention to the crisis our commitment to #EndGunViolence. The goal is to have an inclusive, healing gathering where people leave with a sense of hope for the future and renewed dedication to continue the work to #EndGunViolence. Ending gun violence should not be a partisan issue. As a person of faith, I see this as a humanitarian crisis. 60% of gun deaths in California are by suicide. Finding solutions that keep people safe when they are in crisis is an important cornerstone to bringing this number down. That is just one example. The program will focus on hearing from survivors how gun violence has impacted their lives, and joining a diverse set of faith communities in rituals to honor victims. Please let me know if you will be able to attend. All local politicians in attendance will be introduced and thanked for their participation.
