WORLD PEACE

Honorable Mayor Taylor and Esteemed Council Members: We often hear about and strive for the concept of WORLD PEACE, but in realtity, it may be reasonable to ask ourselves, what are we doing about it? By and large, this noble and worthwhile goal is left to the efforts of others; yet, there is much that you, as a City Council, and as individuals can do. For a moment, consider a few options, such as the following: 1- Supporting others whose full time job is to seek PEACE, at multiple levels, both domestically and internationally. This can be done as simply as a- Sending a letter of support, thanking them for their efforts and acknowledging the ongoing, good work that they do, and/or b- Sending funding to help their vitial and important mission, which in turns, helps us all. 2- Joining ORGANIZATIONS long recongized and respected for the work they do in fostering World Peace, such as a- Mayors For Peace. Established in 1982, this internaitonal organization is dedicated to the promotion of peace. For more information, go to www.mayorsforpeace.org. b- Peace One Day. Started in 1999, this non-profit organization establishes September 21st each year as a day of non-violence, internaitonal unity and cooperation. In year 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanamously voted to pass a Resolution supporting this effort. Their website is www.peaceoneday.org. There are many other ways to acknowledge the importance of PEACE as a way of life. A passive approach only perpetuates the norm. Afterall, if those that can do something about this don't, then those that are left will continue. If enough people say that violence is unacceptable, there may be a prayer that things can change. May this time of year in particular allow us to embrace "Peace on Earth, Goodwill Toward Men". How you go about it is your choice. I hope before year 2020 ends, you will find the the time and way, large or small, to do your part, as community leaders. If you do, many will think the world of you.
