Menlo Park police broke state law, shared license plate data out of state

Dear City Councilmembers,

I’m deeply concerned about the fiasco that was only recently uncovered , not by the promised policies and rules to prevent such mistakes and provide transparency, but by an alert local news outlet.

How much of the reported mismanagement and poor controls is due to Chief Norris, the City Manager or our City Council and what, if any, accountability will be brought to bear when the dust settles? Will each of you commit to getting on top of this right away?

I’m afraid I have to agree with Chuck Bernstein’s remarks that were listed below the story that broke in The Almanac,

"This was clearly a cover-up. By not acknowledging that, city administration is helping to ensure that it will happen again. I am not overly concerned by the breach itself, but I am concerned when our police agencies do not conform to civilian oversight in general. While he seems to be doing a good job in other respects, it is probably time for Chief Norris to be replaced by someone who respects civilian authority.

May I also suggest that the ALPR data holding period be greatly shortened in accordance with the best practices proposed by NYU and the ACLU?

In anticipation of soon seeing a fully public report along with the appropriate remedies and consequences out I remain,

Sincerely,
