Hi, Cecilia, Drew, Betsy, Kate and Ray, Thanks for putting Menlo Park into the most protected state you can as early as you could. You will save lives. Because of the shelter in place order, a lot of people without savings are at risk of becoming homeless, more at risk for catching Covid 19, and more at risk of transmitting it to others. A comprehensive response to the virus includes preventing homelessness. We need a policy that would * halt evictions (due to non-payment of rent) until the COVID-19 emergency has passed * halt foreclosures (due to non-payment of mortgage) until the COVID-19 emergency has passed * protect tenants who do not learn of these emergency measures before their rent is due * include a requirement that landlords notify tenants of their rights during the emergency * include a “right to cure” for tenants allowing them to notify their landlord of COVID-19-related financial impacts up until the date of the actual physical eviction in non-payment of rent case There will be an avalanche of new cases no matter what we do. The survivors can sort out who owes what to whom. Our job now is to maximize the number of survivors. Hoping to see you all in person one of these days! Stay safe, Nina G.
