Members of the City Council,
The recent last-minute change in the RFPs—from making parking a requirement
to merely a priority—is a deceptive and unethical bait-and-switch. It
undermines the promises made to constituents regarding replacement parking
and clearly favors developers, allowing them to plan for a dollar a year
with no parking obligations.
This council is failing in its civic duty by acting without transparency
and disregarding the needs of the community it serves. Moves like this
highlight exactly why the “Save Downtown” ballot measure is so critical. It
has energized residents and businesses alike, many of whom are saying:
enough is enough.
The reason for this change is evident: developers know that there is
insufficient space on these lots to accommodate both residential housing
and parking. Yet rather than addressing this reality responsibly, the
council is putting developer interests above those of the community.
Sincerely,
Mary Seaton
