Dear Council members,
For those of us not usually involved in city governance, these last few months have been interesting to say the least. We have come to appreciate the weighty load you carry as you face challenges and the main one for now being, of course, the placement of affordable housing. I was thinking of Warren Buffet's quote that "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it" and think that in some respects it could be applied to building a city, i.e., our city forefathers have been very careful about planning our fair city, with lovely parks, excellent schools, well designed subdivisions, the Facebook developments as an example, and it would be very easy to destroy this careful planning with not well thought out and to use Mayor Combs remark "holistic" thinking in addressing the location(s) of affordable housing.
I think of myself as a common sense person. To me, it makes common sense that we need affordable housing. It also makes common sense that the housing should be located in an area where transportation and services, like pharmacy and grocery stores, and jobs should be in walking distance such as, for example, downtown. To me, it makes common sense that solar be required in any new housing development. The list goes on, and I conclude by saying if there is ANY doubt, it makes sense to me that you hire urban planning professionals before rushing to make a decision that will adversely impact our fair city and its residents.
