Honorable Mayor Taylor and City Council Members, I have reviewed the EQC's work on climate related recommendations for Menlo Park and I fully support their 2030 climate action plan. They have done a thorough job of evaluating the issues and making reasonable recommendations in light of the changes coming to our planet. I am particularly concerned about our city's more economically vulnerable populations as they are also the group that will be hardest hit by climate change, according to widely cited research from Project Drawdown and the United Nations. As our nation is likely on our way towards a recession because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this climate action plan is one way our city can make a significant contribution to fighting climate change AND supporting our more economically disadvantaged populations. In addition, the residents of our city tend to be environmentally conscious in the first place, often installing solar panels, purchasing electric vehicles, or choosing to walk or bike rather than use fossil fuels. Our city needs to commit to the 2030 plan to reflect the work/investments of its residents. We may be leading other cities with this plan, but that is the point. If we have residential support already, shouldn't we be one of the bolder cities to fund change? Please, let's get this climate action plan passed!
