Support for Item G3 - An Updates on the City's Climate Action Plan

Dear Mayor Nash and City Council Members,
I’m writing in support of the update to the City’s Climate Action Plan (item G3) that will be discussed this evening. I wanted to thank city staff and Environmental Quality Commissioners for their hard work continuing to advance climate measures during the pandemic. These efforts are critical as we continue to feel the impacts of the climate crisis, including more wildfires and unhealthy air quality, draught, and increased flooding risks in bayfront communities.

Last year, polling among San Mateo County residents showed that 85 percent of people wanted to see more local climate action. The leadership that Menlo Park has taken on climate is well supported by the community. In particular, the city should be commended for the solar-battery microgrid that will provide clean emergency power to the new community center in Belle Haven, avoiding the use of polluting diesel generators; and the project will save the city millions of dollars through reduced energy bills.

Thank you for continuing progress on climate measures that will make our community healthier and more resilient.
Sincerely,
Diane Bailey
