Hello City Council,
I cross El Camino by bicycle going to work every day. About once a month I see near collisions on pedestrians by cars making a right turn on red. Most drivers don’t to look for pedestrians and cyclists at all, they only look at the oncoming El Camino traffic trying to spot a gap to jump in. It has been getting worse by the year. Last year I stopped a man in a Jeep from running over a woman with a baby carriage in the crosswalk with the crossing light on.
I was nearly hit this evening crossing El Camino. I was in the crosswalk and the crossing signal was on. The woman who almost hit me gave me the finger when she saw what she had done. I cannot understand what vile space her mind was in.
I urge you ban right turns on red on El Camino before there are serious injuries or fatalities. Washington DC banned right on red citywide precisely to protect pedestrians and cyclists. San Francisco regularly has right-on-red fatalities, and is starting to remove right on red at the most dangerous intersections.
If Menlo Park cares about its Vision Zero plan, the city must take action about right turns on red on El Camino.
Thank you and stay safe,
Greg Faris
