Members of the City Council,
Please reject the notion of assessing a fee for newspaper boxes. We are in
the midst of a trustworthy news crisis, especially at the local level. Our
local newspapers provide this information at little or no cost. In the
interest of a transparent governing process, a free and readily available
press is essential for an informed and engaged public. Any barrier to this
dissemination of information will impede a participatory and democratic
government for our community.
In addition, our local papers provide community news which keeps our
neighborhoods as a cohesive structure. News about our schools, faith
communities, civic organization as well of our police and fire services are
essential to keep the community running as a well-oiled machine.
I urge you to reject the proposal for charging a fee for newspaper boxes.
