There was less than zero justification for using a Taser on this gentleman
who was napping and minding his own business. Way more than 1,000 people
have died after being tased. There are a hundred different de-escalation
techniques that should have been tried before using a Taser on an unarmed
individual whose vulnerabilities the cop knew nothing about. In addition,
the manufacturer, Axon Enterprise, specifically warns that death can occur
when the Taser is deployed to the chest. This is a textbook example of how
NOT to use a Taser on a human being. This cop clearly was not trained on
the risk factors associated with using a Taser in such a reckless and
negligent fashion. The victim in this case could have easily died from his
fall or had serious brain damage. The case should result in a
multi-million-dollar judgment against the City of Palo Alto.
