Blocking off rooms in Arrillaga Community Center by "city staff"

Hi City Council, and City Manager Justin Murphy.

I wanted to share a very unpleasant situation brewing in the Arrillaga Community center.

Post-pandemic, the community center and activities have slowly picked up. Several of us take classes in the evenings and it’s convenient.
However, over the past 6 months we have noticed detoririating situation on how scheduling is being managed

1. The city “HR team” apparently has permanently blocked off ELM Room — there is no justification to do this when community activities are already stretched for space.
2. This particular room also happens to have an outdoor door access allowing fitness instructors to keep door open for air circulation.
3. The room we are in currently has no windows and the air conditioning in the building doesn’t work very well — there are not enough portable fans either, making it extremely difficult in hot days.
4. The scheduling seems to be very mis-managed. A fitness class followed by choir class in the same room with different requirements should never be done While the ELM room should have been provided to the non-profit for their meeting in the evening. It was sitting EMPTY And LOCKED.
5. The arrangement of tables / chairs — is completely confusing as also the gym equipment.
6. CLEANLINESS of Bathroom and facilities in general is truly lacking. One of the bathroom stalls doors looked so dirty - I pointed to the front desk staff more than month ago to have them clean the bathroom but that stall door is still looking same.

As Tax payers — we need the community center to be given priority for community programs / activities. City Staff already has a fully building to themselves. They shouldn’t block off rooms to come when they want, but go through the due process of booking like everyone else in the community.

If the city staff is short of “Conference rooms” —> then they should take it up with the city manager and city council, and bring it to a public meeting for discussion.

Please release ELM Room for Community activities / meetings / choir sessions. And improve the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Savita.
