Stop signs to support safe bike/pedestrian routes

City Councilmembers:

Thanks for your service to our community. I am aware that the Council will be reviewing a report this evening on stop sign policy in our community. I have read the report and am glad that several problematic intersections have been studied and that the City may agree to place stop signs to improve safety.

I want to urge you to consider adding the Santa Monica/Coleman intersection to the list of areas that would benefit from stop signs. This intersection should be well known to the Council, the city staff and to the county as the community has been asking for stop signs in this location for years. This intersection is complex - it has two school bus stops and two driveways from large apartment complexes. Coleman is a main corridor for cars, bikes and pedestrians going to/from MA high school, Upper Laurel and Lower Laurel elementary schools. I have frequently witnessed "near misses" of cars and pedestrians (kids).

The Gilbert/Pope intersection is also listed in the report but does not appear to be prioritized for stop signs. Gilbert is a wide street, also used by school kids, where cars pick up speed due to lack of stop signs. I urge you to place stop signs at this intersection as well.

Thank you,
