Dear Menlo Park City Council,

As a longtime resident of Menlo Park since 2008, and as an avid user of the Burgess swimming pool and athletic facilities, I am writing to express my strongest possible support for the continuation of Tim Sheeper‘s contract with the city. It
would be an absolute tragedy for Menlo Park to lose out on Tim’s robust and inclusive leadership. Our vibrant pool community is the envy of the communities around us, and I believe it is world class—it has achieved this status because of Tim’s vision, dedication,
and thoughtful inclusive leadership that serves everyone in the community, no matter their ability.

It’s hard to imagine a more vibrant pool and aquatic community. Under Tim’s leadership, Burgess pool has positively influenced every single person in my family over the years. My kids both learned to swim there, have used the pool for swimming
lessons, summer camps, and for athletic teams. My wife and I both have swum laps there at open swim, progressed to the Masters swim team (where lane mates range from their early 20s to 90 years old!), have swum in multiple Masters swim meets, and have joined
in many swim clinics to improve our strokes. All of us have regularly used the pool for open lap swim. Furthermore, my wife regularly participates in aqua aerobics, the Aquafit class, which is an amazing program that serves people of all abilities and ages.
This was especially important when she had a running injury and had difficulty with foot and knee pain. More recently, we have even delved into triathlon with Tim’s encouragement and supportive team environment.

When we go to the pool, the staff is always responsive, motivated, well-informed, courteous, friendly, and highly dedicated to Tim. Many have been there for years and years.

We have formed strong bonds at the pool with other Menlo Park residents—some of our best friends. Because of friendships that began at the pool managed and operated by Tim, we have been best man and maid of honor in a wedding, have attended
friends’ birthday parties and special family celebrations, and have generally enriched our lives and strengthened our Menlo Park bonds. We believe this pool community is unique and special. A large part of this is because of Tim Sheeper.

Also realize that Tim managed to keep the pool open and safe during most of the COVID-19 pandemic, truly an impressive and beneficial achievement that should be appreciated and recognized by the city. This is a standout achievement among the
entire state of California. The pool community provided much-needed fitness and community during a dark time of isolation and fear. This is due to Tim’s thoughtful dedication and fastidious adherence to the highest health and safety standards.

Please continue this amazing pool community by extending Tim’s contract. Any change in management would be an awful turn of events for Menlo Park.

Sincerely,
Michael Rothenberg
