Dear Mayor and Members of the Menlo Park City Council,
I would like to urge the City of Menlo Park to support safer routes along Coleman Avenue for students traveling to and from Menlo-Atherton High School (M-A). This conversation has been ongoing since 2021-22 through the Coleman and Ringwood Avenue Transportation Study and we want to help turn four years of Safe Routes to School (SRTS) efforts into meaningful action.
Our district staff have worked closely with the City of East Palo Alto and the County to prioritize safety for students and families. Together, we have helped advance improvements such as extending street corners to protect students as they step off the curb and cross (photo attached), and creating roundabouts to slow vehicles. This partnership demonstrates how community involvement and city action can improve routes to school.
Many students from East Palo Alto and Belle Haven attend M-A. We ask Menlo Park to work with SRTS, San Mateo County, schools, and families to improve walking, bicycling, and crossing conditions along Coleman Avenue so students can travel safely to school and home.
Thank you for your consideration and commitment to our students safety.
For our students,
