Dear Mayor Nash, Vice Mayor Wise, and Councilmembers,
Thank you for making the Coleman Avenue bike lane pilot permanent on
September 15; Im encouraged that more people are biking on Coleman, and
that residents report it feels safer to ride there.
Im writing in support of agendizing a discussion of a flexible-post pilot
on Coleman Ave.
A lot of kids use Coleman on their way to school at M-A and Laurel.
Unfortunately, a painted bike lane doesnt prevent a vehicle from drifting
into the lane, and it doesnt discourage a delivery driver from parking in
the bike lane.
For the past couple of years, Ive co-lead community bike rides in the new,
protected bike lanes on El Camino Real. It makes a big difference in driver
behavior to have a physical barrier between the vehicle lane and the bike
lane. A flexible barrier doesnt guarantee anyones safety, but it raises
driver awareness.
Thanks for your consideration,
Katherine Dumont
