Dear Silicon Valley Mayors, City Council Members, and County Supervisors:

If we haven't met already, my name is Russell Hancock and I'm the president of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. I've been organizing a series of zoom roundtables for the Joint Venture board since the pandemic set in, and I'm writing to invite you to participate as well.

The next roundtable is with one of Stanford's most eminent political scientists and it takes place this coming Friday (September 18) at 10 am. The details (and a link to register) are at the bottom of this message.

The subject: presidents, populism and the crisis of democracy.

Professor Terry Moe holds an endowed chair in political science at Stanford and he's a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Considered a foremost authority on the American presidency, he'll be talking about the populist pressures on the office and the ominous consequences for our system of government. His latest book lays out a powerful argument about the root causes of populism and the dangers it poses, then lays out a set of potential reforms. The book has attracted enormous accolades and is triggering a hugely important national conversation.

I know Terry well. I'm drawn to him because he is that special kind of academic who is held in great esteem inside the ivory tower while at the same time being highly influential on the political set and on mainstream thinking. His speaking and writing style is clear and direct.

Please register by following the link below, and feel warmly welcome to share the invitation with your staff and other colleagues. It's a rare opportunity and a subject of greatest importance. I'll be so pleased if you can join us.

Yours,

Russ
