Dear Mayor Taylor and Council Members,
I serve on the EQC but write in my own capacity as a concerned citizen of Menlo Park today.
I am thrilled about the progress on development of the community center in Belle Haven, and especially the city's investigation into options for a sustainable, carbon free, nonpolluting project through the Gridscape analysis.
Please take advantage of the no-cost option to install a solar-battery microgrid backup power system with EV charging. I am very concerned about the air pollution and carbon emissions of dirty diesel generators. The community center site and all of District 1 suffers air pollution from the traffic on Highway 101 and is vulnerable to the flooding impacts of climate change. It would be unjust to saddle this area with more pollution from a diesel generator.
Please either invest in a clean energy microgrid or lease the equipment at no cost to the city instead of using a fossil fuel backup generator at this site. It is critical to consider climate and clean air in your decisions around the community center.
