Honorable Menlo Park City Council,
I support building new affordable homes downtown and I urge you to do the same on January 14th.
I am a teacher here and yet in spite of working full time for 24 years, I still can’t afford to buy a home. I have been lucky to have found affordable rentals in East Palo Alto, but you know that since Facebook moved in, any rental for families costs upwards
of $4,500. Many of us are getting priced out of our lives here and it will negatively impact the community when we are gone.
I have also seen yard signs in Menlo Park that say they are for affordable housing but want “no mega towers”. Living one block from the Willows neighborhood for the past 18 years, I have seen many “mega houses” take over the neighborhood, filling entire lots,
cutting down beautiful trees, and blocking the sky of their neighbors. If Menlo Park is willing to approve this type of mega-development for those who can afford to buy, there should be no double standard when it comes to housing those of us who are valuable
members of the community and choose to work in service of others where the pay is not as extravagant.
Please vote "yes" to new affordable homes downtown on January 14th.
Sincerely,
Toni
California
