Honorable Menlo Park City Council,
Dear City Council Members,
I am writing to let you know that I SUPPORT the designation of the three parking lots in downtown Menlo Park as surplus land to be used for the construction of new housing, at least some of which will be below market rate. I hope you vote accordingly on
January 14th. The opposition may be loud but please dont let the nay-sayers distract you or dissuade you from doing what needs to be done. The plan has are plenty of supporters as well.
It seems to me that the sprawling surface-level paved parking lots, not adjacent to green space, are a pretty silly use of some of the most valuable land in the world and as such are the perfect location for new below-market-rate housing, the building of
which (as we all well know) is not only required by state law but is also the compassionate and environmentally conscious thing to do. It is very important to me that local workers such as teachers be able to afford to live here rather than being forced to
commute from far away.
I believe that with community input and creative thinking, it will be possible to meet the needs of current residents and businesses, as well as new ones. (Perhaps most notably, I do think it will be important for the parking spots to be replaced in a more
efficient use of space such as a multilevel parking structure, perhaps as the first step once construction begins).
Please vote "yes" to new affordable homes downtown on Tuesday.
Sincerely,
Deborah Holtzman
