Dear City Council,
I am writing to oppose the construction of housing on our downtown parking lots.
As a business and property owner of 40 years on Plaza One, I have a vested interest in your decision. My business depends on ample and convenient parking for my patients, without which I will suffer serious financial consequences, including decreased property values.
Because of limited parking supply, I have been yelled at and threatened because I waited for a space in my plaza to open, instead of circling the lot endlessly. I have also had to park near Valparaiso Ave. to find available parking. And that was when we had more parking available downtown, before parklets and bicycle lanes, which our plazas have had to absorb.
I know the City is obliged to find housing, which I support. However, this location will have serious consequences on the health and vibrancy of our downtown businesses. If you think the downtown vacancy rate is bad now, just wait for this project to be approved. Who would want to rent or buy property downtown? I would not.
Please vote against this project.
