Subject: Traffic on Chester StreetDear Kirsten and Ray, dear City Council Members,
I wanted to give you feedback on the traffic situation on the three streets in the Willows where the traffic signs have been
installed. As you know, law enforcement of the signs has started last Friday. The traffic situation has somewhat improved but is
not under control by any means.
I work from home and have been monitoring the activity on our streets during the last week and it seems as long as the signs are
being enforced (i.e. there is police presence) the signs are being followed. Unfortunately, the police has not been at all 3
streets at the same time during the posted hours (3 - 7 pm on weekdays). This means that as soon as a street is "unattended", the
commuters flock to that street.
Case in point, Chester Street yesterday. There was no police presence on any of the three streets at 5:30 which is the busiest
time of the day. As Chester Street is the last street before entering the freeway, it is hit hardest as commuters flock to that
street. When calling the police I was told that there was no police officer available at that time. I understand it was raining
yesterday, but especially during inclement weather it is necessary to enforce these signs for the time being, as during rainy
commute the traffic is heavier and commuters will seek shortcuts more readily. Two blocks of Chester Street were blocked again
yesterday - the roundabout was jammed up again and people were going the wrong way and my neighbors and I were not able to get out
of our driveway. This went on for about 2 hours. This is not liveable and has to stop.
I respectfully request that the MPPD step up their enforcement of these street signs to send a clear message to the commuters.
Especially at the beginning of rolling out such signs it is important that people understand that the police is serious about
enforcing the law in our community.
