I am writing to express my support for the three rail crossings option.
Furthermore, I strongly urge the Council to consider that the choices made about regarding tunnel, trench, elevated tracks or some
hybrid are, in my view, 100 year choices. That is, the Council must consider a timeframe that what is decided in 2019 will be what
Menlo Park will be living with in the year 2119.
The history of El Camino Real, for example, harkens back to at least the late 1600's with the missions scattered along the route
that would progress from a foot and cart path to the roads and highways we have now. The train tracks in Menlo Park date back to
the 1860's. Given the built-up infrastructure within the peninsula, we are unlikely to see any significant changes in public
transportation corridors unless they rise or fall vertically within existing pathways. Failure to adequately plan now for such a
timeframe will result in future generations questioning our lack of forethought.
I personally lean towards a trench as it provides for easier access for maintenance on tracks and trains, but I look to engineers,
social scientists, emergency personnel, and everyday citizens to inform my opinions.
