Dear City folks, I am writing to alert you to a dangerous crosswalk on Santa Cruz Avenue near Sharon Road. This is the crosswalk that many La Entrada kids from the University Heights neighborhood use to get to and from school each day. My wife Sandy Sloan and I spoke a couple of times with Reuben Nino before he retired, but there has been no noticeable change as a result of those discussions. Our granddaughter and a friend were almost hit by a car this afternoon, which is why I'm writing. With crosswalk lights flashing, 3 cars went right through the crosswalk even as the kids had started across. Sandy had to grab them to prevent them from getting hit. The problem is two-fold: traffic moves along this stretch of Santa Cruz at a good clip, and the lights that are supposed to alert drivers to pedestrians at the crosswalk (blinking lights on a sign and lights in the pavement) are too dim to be easily seen. The solution may be to install brighter lights on both the sign and in the crosswalk. A similar setup at the downtown post office crosswalk seems much brighter and more effective. Also, it would be great to lower the speed limit. In any case, this is a situation that needs attention. We ask that someone in the City attend to this problem.
