This is the crosswalk that many La Entrada kids from the University Heights neighborhood use to get to and from school each day. My wife Sandy Sloan and I spoke a couple of times with Reuben Nino before he retired, but there has been no noticeable change as a result of those discussions. Our granddaughter and a friend were almost hit by a car this afternoon, which is why I'm writing. With crosswalk lights flashing, 3 cars went right through the crosswalk even as the kids had started across. Sandy had to grab them to prevent them from getting hit. The problem is two-fold: traffic moves along this stretch of Santa Cruz at a good clip, and the lights that are supposed to alert drivers to pedestrians at the crosswalk (blinking lights on a sign and lights in the pavement) are too dim to be easily seen. The solution may be to install brighter lights on both the sign and in the crosswalk. A similar setup at the downtown post office crosswalk seems much brighter and more effective. Also, it would be great to lower the speed limit. In any case, this is a situation that needs attention. We ask that someone in the City attend to this problem.
