To the Menlo Park City Council Members,
My name is Carolyn Shepard. I am the president of Solutions for Supportive Homes, a non-profit organization made up of a large group of families in San Mateo County. We are parents who are supporting our adult children with mental health disabilities who require permanent supportive housing. The majority of our parents are aging and are worried about where their children will live and who will take care of them if they become incapacitated or when they pass away.
I am writing in support of Menlo Parks Parkline/SRI housing proposal. I read that a portion of the affordable housing development will be tailored to special needs housing. I ask that those with mental health disabilities, who come under the Extremely Low-Income category and have capacity to live independently but require on-site support be included in this development. It should be noted that it is critical that on-site support be a part of the development for special needs units to ensure safe and successful living for those with mental health and other disabilities.
We are pleased to see that Menlo Park recognizes the need to provide housing for those with special needs. It is desperately needed in our county and cities.
